Brutal Sorcery (1983)

Brutal Sorcery (1983)
orig: Du gu

Cast: Lily Chan, Hoi-Shan Kwan, Hon Chi Lai
A story of demonic possession by black magic, where the loyal & faithfull husband is dragged into a pit of adultary & despair in his vain attempt to overthrow the beastial & lustfull influences of 'brutal sorcery'.
IMDB Page
'Silly but fun black magic yarn set between Hong Kong and Thailand. Was a dubious dubbed version I watched, so possibly a lot of the plot was made up on the spot by the people in charge of the dubbing. The story is about taxi driver and family man Alan Chang who unwittingly picks up a pair of ghosts in love, separated and forced to journey from two cemeteries to meet up. They put a curse on the taxi driver that he has to get both their remains to the female ghost’s sister in Thailand. The taxi driver does this only to have a brief affair with the sister, whom when Alan finally tells that he's married and that he has a daughter, she puts yet another curse on him this time the black magic death curse. Very mild for most part but a lot of fun with crude FX work and silly moments like when Alan eats a bowl of goldfish or when he does an insane possessed dance. Highlight is when the curse reaches its climax and the driver’s chest expands to bursting point. I doubt I’d hunt for long to find it but if you happen to stumble over a copy, it’ll cheer up a wet afternoon.'

Blood Sucking Babes from Burbank (2006)
aka: Decrepit Crypt of Nightmares

Kirk Bowman

Writer: Kirk Bowman
Cast: Heidi Brucker, Danilo Mancinelli, Mira Rayson, Danny Kitz, Danielle Kreinik
Passionate archeology students search the Burbank mountains for Angela's Jewel Box, an artifact created by the King's Sorceress. It was lost by New World explorers in 1774. Now, modern air pollution has warped the strange powers of the box, giving any female who touches its glistening jewels the urge to eat men. Good-natured Gary finds the box. Frustrated with his sexy girlfriend Samantha's cold shoulder, he offers it to her competitor Janet, in exchange for sex. He barely escapes, suddenly realizing he's about to be filet mignon. Gary accidentally drops jewels throughout Burbank, leaving a trail of "man-hungry" babes in his wake. Girls turn into shameless cannibals on the street, at the beach and even in a Burbank Bar. A mysterious drifter with a secret and the girl he loves are the only hope to destroy the box. They must submerge the box in sea water to destroy its evil powers before it's too late. Don't miss the surprise ending - it's definitely not for the faint-of-heart!
IMDB Page
'Two archaeologist teams fight it out for the chance of winning a holiday, one teams subject is later day sex toys/dildos the others is trying to uncover a lost jewellery box believed to belong to a medieval witch. Sadly for the film we follow the later team’s progress as they venture into a local Burbank forest Blair Witch style to find the box. On finding it we learn that its contents turn all females into man eating demons , thankfully for male viewers its with the side effect of stripping off. It’s a real low grade shitfest featuring joke shop quality props. It’s hard though to get so down about it as it’s clearly aimed at the so bad its fun crowd, with the added benefit that some of the actresses involved are very pleasing on the eye. You get bikini clad chicks chomping on people with gore that looks more like cake and food colouring with the added blood done by computers. During one scene a guy shouts ‘This can’t be happening this is Burbank’ sadly it happened and I had the misfortune of sitting through all 90 minutes. Recommended to fans of trash who like their semi naked chicks wearing novelty fangs.'

Mother of Tears (2007)

Mother of Tears (2007)
orig: La Terza madre
Director: Dario Argento
Writers: Jace Anderson, Dario Argento
Cast: Asia Argento, Cristian Solimeno, Adam James, Moran Atias, Valeria Cavalli
The final installment of Dario Argento's "Three Mothers" trilogy. The film centers on a young American art student, Sarah, who "unwittingly opens an ancient urn that unleashes the demonic power of the world's most powerful witch. As a scourge of suicides plague the city and witches from all over the world converge on Rome to pay homage, Sarah must use all her own psychic powers to stop the 'Mother of Tears' before her evil conquers the world.
IMDB Page
'Always a thing to celebrate a new Argento film, though other than his fine Masters of Horror episodes it’s been something of a let down being a fan recently. Thankfully for most part though with Mother of Tears he’s back on form. It’s the third and final part of his Three Mothers trilogy (first being the seminal Suspiria second was the weak entry Inferno). The plot’s about Sarah (played by Dario’s ever sultry looking daughter Asia Argento) who works on restoring old archaeological finds for a Rome Museum. She’s given the task of sorting out a recent found urn which contains three stone statues, a dagger and an old red tunic. Turns out the items belonged to a black witch the Mother of Tears. It’s not long before a local cult of black witches have the items back and thanks to the tunic manage to resurrect the Mother witch, whom vows to bring back the second age of witchcraft onto mankind. Hell breaks out onto the streets of Rome, Sarah seems to be the only hope and thankfully turns out she’s the daughter of a white witch and has powers enough of her own to help over turn the evil. Sure the plots all nonsense but its done with typical Argento swirling camera work and pounding gothic music the old school fans won’t mind. Some joyous gory deaths along the way best being one of Sarah’s helpers and her lesbian lover, one ends up stabbed and eye’s gouged out while the other is skewered naked on the floor. I could of lived without the jedi mind trick nonsense of Sarah being able to seem invisible and the ending was a bit of a damp squib with the Mother looking less sexy than in earlier scenes, early on she had a black cloak and one boob showing by the end she’s rough like Amy Winehouse. But on the whole it’s without a doubt Argento’s most accomplished film since Opera.'

When Evil Calls centres around the mysterious appearance of a text message that grants the students at Willburn Hall their wildest desires. A-cup Alice wants bigger breasts, until her cup runneth over in an explosive mathematics class. Hilary would give her right arm to lose weight and the blades of a kitchen waste disposal unit oblige. One by one, Willburn’s students learn a lethal lesson: be careful what you wish for.
IMDB Page
'Amateurish episodic horror set in an English school, about a clown who grants wishes by phone text only the results of the wishes are never what the person expects. All the stories (20 in all are introduced by Sean Pertwee what was he thinking to take this job) and range from the crude to rude things like a girls boobs growing to the point of exploding as her boyfriend wished she had bigger ones. The effects range from the not too bad like in the one episode a girl with lesbian tendencies wishes she could look good enough to eat and ends up having her face chewed off, to really bad computer effects made ones like in the cautionary tale on smoking. On the plus side some of the school uniform clad actresses are great looking it’s just a shame the overall concept is done so badly, maybe less demanding teen viewers will enjoy it more.'

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
Director: Tim Burton
Writers: John Logan, Stephen Sondheim (musical)
Cast: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall, Sacha Baron Cohen
After being sent away by Judge Turpin, Sweeney Todd a.k.a Benjamin Barker returns to London with the help of a sailor, Anthony Hope. He opens a barber shop above Mrs. Lovett's Meat Pie Shop, where she sells "the worst pies in London." With the help of Mrs. Lovett, Todd means to rid London of the corrupt aristocracy, and hopes to be reunited with his daughter, Johanna, who is now Judge Turpin's ward.
IMDB Page
'Gory, grotesque and gloriously dark humored musical version of the Sweeney Todd story. Courtesy of the familiar Burton team of Depp & Carter (only this time losing Danny Elfman as it’s based on a stage musical by Stephen Sondheim). Adding to the fact Tim Burton's recent films have been very hit and miss and I'm sure I'm not alone in the fact that I tend to hate and be bored senseless during musicals, I wasn't overly expecting to enjoy this. How wrong I was as it's such a visual & aural treat and remarkably more depth to its plot than this story as been given before, almost as if penned by Dickens. Performances are top notch with Johnny Depp cutting a fine figure as Mr T looking somewhat like the flaming lips lead singer Wayne Coyne (specially in the scenes he sports a blood drenched face) and singing like the great white duke himself David Bowie. Helena Bonham Carter does fine in the role of human meat pie maker Mrs. Lovett, the supporting cast are likewise on fine form, though Alan Rickman seems slightly out of water during the scenes he sings. It's also got to be mentioned here in cultdb that it's a shame that Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Anthony Head and horror legend Christopher Lee had a song cut, surely a treat for the DVD release with some luck. Anyway to sum it up the film flows so well and we reach the end in what seems like no time at all, my favorite bit being the scene Mr T and Mrs. Lovett sing about which humans make for the better pie like politicians being too oily. Highly recommended though the nature of musicals I’m sure it’s a film that will not work for all viewers.'
