The Cow, 1990 - ★★★★

REVIEWED

Sadly viewed without subtitles, which is a crying shame because the young Russian kid who narrates the story sounds absolutely amazing. Its the tale of a young boy left in charge of his families cow while his father goes to town to sell its calf. The cow breaks free of its shackles attempting to find its calf, the young boy hotly pursues the beast but eventually becomes sleepy and falls asleep in barn, and dreams of becoming one with the animal.

Less polished than his later animations, which seem more due to lacking financial support than his own craft. That said The Cow is still another triumph by the unfeasibly talented Russian animator Alexander Petrov. I'd guess the stories intentions are to point out the poverty stricken Russian workers, breaking free from oppression.

[Personal Reasons For Remembering]

The dream sequence floating off into the clouds as the boy walks out onto the cows horns and the savaged beast of burden breaking free of its shackles was so stunningly drawn.
