REVIEWED

“Consciousness of life is superior to life, knowledge of the laws of happiness is superior to happiness - that is what we must fight against.” - Dostoyevsky

Aleksandr Petrovs truly beautiful and haunting animated short based on a short story by famed Russian master of mirth Dostoyevsky. Its a 20 minute primal scream to god, that chronicles a man on a final train journey, who had concluded long ago that there is nothing worth existing for, so as decided to commit suicide. Only a chance encounter with a young girl changes his mind.

Visually and aurally faultless, its like a great painting coming to life in short animation form. I'll be honest I'm far too dumb and shallow minded to appreciate the works of Dostoyevsky, so its always a treat when I stumble over a film or piece of art based on his writings I can understand. Thats not to say Petrov's short is simplified or dumbed down, just that its made in an easier way for me to handle.

[Personal Reasons For Remembering]

The entire piece is filled with memorable moment after moment, my personal favorite segments being the tiny baby learning to walk in the palm of our protagonists hands, and the nightmarish eclipse fire ritual.
