The film tells the story of Will Stanton, a young man who learns he is the last of a group of warriors who have dedicated their lives to fighting the forces of the Dark. Traveling back and forth through time, Will discovers a series of clues which lead him into a showdown with forces of unimaginable power. With the Dark once again rising, the future of the world rests in Will's hands.
'Family based fantasy really takes on Harry Potter in the visual stakes but falls flat on warmth of character and doesn't deliver its plot as well as it really could of done. It's the old boy must put down his childish things and become a man story. 13 year old Will Stanton has to save his family and the world from darkness. Thankfully he's given birth rite powers due to being the seventh son of a seventh son. He has to collect 6 stones to overcome the Rider who's wickedly played by Christopher 'the ninth Doctor Who' Eccleston. Will is helped by various locals headed by the ever cool Ian 'Deadwood' McShane who have guarded the secrets of the stones for years. My kids loved it more than me so I find it hard to really pick on its faults, but Its got to be said as much as the action is done well (best scene for me was the freezing and flooding of a country manor) its the lapses between that really feel dull something Harry Potter did so well almost to the point of being as good and entertaining as the action scenes. I don't know if this is due to the original story but also the acting of young Will played by Alexander Ludwig doesn't help, I know he's playing a teen, but does he have to look so confused and sulky in every scene. To sum it up the kids and undemanding viewers will enjoy this, just don't be expecting the anything life changing or deep.'
