Roger & Carolyn Perron move into their new rural home with their four daughters, only the house had a dark past. And the couple are forced to seek help from a pair of paranormal investigators.
There isn't an original bone in the entire movie, the haunted house story felt like a mash up of The Exorcist, Poltergeist and especially The Amityville Horror. While the paranormal investigators and their antique shop like warehouse reminded me so much of the overlooked anthology horror gem Friday The 13th The Series.
But thats not to say The Conjuring is bad, far from it. Its hands down the scariest and best executed horror movie since Martyrs in my humble opinion. James Wan's matured so much since his debut with Saw, a film I always respected as an horror genre fan for its huge success on its limited budget but I hated for its content (agree the shoddy sequels and ripoffs didn't help warm me either). Hes really developed into a master of horror. The mostly 70's period detail worked to the films favour (great era for scary movies, more directors should use it). The triumph though was the entire casting, everyones character was believable, and rare for an horror film all very easy to warm towards. Being an atheist my only slight quibble was its over use of religion, but guess thats par for course with supernatural/possession movies. Thankfully for a change 'Believe the Hype' its truly a modern horror classic.

The creepy as shit doll and films rich cinematography, outside of The Orphanage recently I can't remember an horror looking so damned good.
