"Spy on us, and we'll spy on you." - Benji (Alexander Skarsgård)
Refreshingly intelligent drama from the amazingly talented Brit Marling & Zal Batmanglij (the team behind last years indie gem 'Sound of My Voice'). 'The East' follows a secret intelligence firm who deal with high end corporate threats. Fresh young operative Sarah is forced to question her job and own personal beliefs when shes assigned to infiltrate an underground collective of anarchists.
Clearly this is a small film in a big movies shoes, for most part it succeeds. Only real issue I had are few little twee moments that felt like they'd been included to pad out the time, more than to add to the overall plot. Its actually a better produced movie than last years 'Sound of My Voice', but I still preferred that films more ambiguous nature to this ones more straight laced one. That said Brit Marlings going from strength to strength (as both a writer and actress) with every passing movie. Of course Its always great to see Ellen Page take a break from video game acting and True Bloods Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) in a central movie role. And not forgetting lesser known English actor Toby Kebbell, who commands every scene hes in.
