Texas Chainsaw 3D puts the Zzzzzzz in BuZZZzzz
Another trite entry in the hailing TCM franchise, the atrocious plot concerns original Sawyer family offspring Heather. She's grown up thinking she was someone else's child but due to being left property in her real mothers will. She finds out the truth that shes a descendant of the sinister Sawyer clan. Heather takes a trip to see her newly acquired property and finds out shes not the only descendant still alive, her cousin Bubba 'Leatherface' Sawyer is still lurking around the family home.

I'd feared the worst about this sorry mess early on when I'd heard it was being filmed in 3D. Sure the previous sequels and reboots had been bad but this really out did itself on the shit scale. The story was lame, visually it looked like a million dollar straight to video movie, the actings was sub par (they even threw in a poor mans Brad Pitt with Shaun Sipos)... hell even the gore FX felt decidedly shoddy. If I ever find a magic lamp I'm saving one wish for John Luessenhop to never make another horror genre movie.

I really doubt I'll be remember this for anything. Guess the highlight was the silly anti Christian song by John R Butler that played on a car radio, was a very South Park moment.

ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2 (2011)

ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2 (2011)
Director: Robert Hall
Cast: Nick Principe, Thomas Dekker, Owain Yeoman, Brian Austin Green, Danielle Harris
The sequel to Laid to Rest, that brings back ChromeSkull, who barely escaped death in the first movie and is hell-bent on continuing where he left off... and forging a new path of terror and destruction.
IMDB Page
Following directly on from the circumstances in the first film, a dubious police investigator finds Chromeskull barely alive needing extensive eye and facial reconstruction. At the killers side is what would have been his final victim, she somehow gets violently killed that same night even though Chromeskull is getting medical treatment. The story jumps forward three months and Chromey is back on his feet having been helped by a clandestine company, who plan on using the masked maniac as their own killing machine, even sorting him out with his own personalized cache of blades and weapons.

Sticking to the same formula that made the first film so successful, showering the viewer with an endless array of gory set pieces. Sadly they've not improved on the originals flaws, this being unsatisfactory character development and nonsensical plot. In fact Laid to Rest 2 adds an even more unbelievable feeling with the now obligatory use of quick edited cctv/phone/video camera footage. I am sure the simply amused Saw/Hostel type of horror buff will be ranking this as one of the horrors of 2011, and I will agree its nice to see really traditional FX of this caliber. I would have just liked to have some depth to the proceedings, actors who do not look uncomfortable on film and a director who can add tension and atmosphere between kills. If the producers could improve those areas, the third outing (which is hinted at after the final credits) would rank as a modern classic and not just successful fluff.

The Zombie Diaries 2 (2011)

The Zombie Diaries 2 (2011)
aka: World of the Dead: The Zombie Diaries 2
Directors: Michael Bartlett, Kevin Gates
Cast: Philip Brodie, Alix Wilton Regan, Rob Oldfield
Three months have passed since a viral outbreak wiped out 99.9% of the world's population, turning its victims into flesh-eating living dead. In the UK, a surviving band of soldiers and civilians have taken refuge at a rural military barracks. Life in this new world is tough and brutal, but hope appears when a high level communication is received from a military base on the coast, telling of sanctuary elsewhere in Europe... But just as salvation appears to be in reach, the base suffers an overwhelming defeat at the hands of the living dead! The surviving handful of troops and civilians must now make their way to the coast to uncover the truth behind the message. Their perilous journey takes them across a now treacherous, death-ravaged landscape, where the living dead are vast in number and wandering bandits impose their own malicious sense of law and order. What follows is a journey into hell and a desperate battle against all odds for the very survival of the human race.
IMDB Page
Picking up around the same period as the first Zombies Diaries, this time just following one group of survivors a small set of terrortial army recruits. Even though they're armed they still face the same hazards as any survivor which is primery the undead masses, but also with dwindling food, clean water and medical supplys they also need to fight off a gang of backwards rural survivors.

With having watched both parts 1 and 2 back to back, I came into this one fearing the worse, but I'm glad to say I was proven wrong. Its still no '28 Days/Weeks Later' but its a massive improvement over the first film, clearly due to its improved budget, which in turn as been spent on real actors, helps also that they actually spent a little time on the plot and dialogue. Also unlike its predecessor Zombie Diaries 2 has even got a decent ammount of undead (they don't actually call them zombies within the film itself). Downside again for me at least was how serious it takes itself, a little bit of humour once in while wouldn't have gone a miss, the rape scene seemed tacked on more than being essential to the plot, but who knows by the 3rd outing they could have a breakthrough like Dog Soldiers on their hands.

Quarantine 2 Terminal (2011)

Quarantine 2 Terminal (2011)
Director: John Pogue
Cast: Mercedes Masöhn, Josh Cooke and Mattie Liptak
A follow up to 2008’s Quarantine, this entry was directed by John Pogue and “picks up later that night at LAX, as passengers board a flight to Nashville. When a passenger becomes violently ill with a mysterious rabies-like virus, the plane makes an emergency landing at a large metropolitan airport. Jenny (Mercedes Masohn), a heroic yet inexperienced flight attendant, takes charge of the safety of her passengers. Relieved when a swarm of heavily equipped emergency vehicles, police units and the CDC arrive, Jenny and the passengers soon discover that they have been quarantined and are now trapped. Desperate to escape, Jenny enlists the help of one of the surviving passengers, a kindergarten teacher, Henry (Josh Cooke), to devise a plan to survive.
IMDB Page
The story centers around the original tenant from the previous films appartment bringing contaminated rats onboard a plane. Of course the rats manage to infect a passanger and its not long before they need to make an unschedualed stop at an airport. Its not long before the infected passanger spreads the plague to others from the plane, which ends up with the terminal being locked down to curb a greater spread. Its left to the remaining uninfected to try to survive and escape.

Trite sequel to Quarantine which was in turn a remake of the fantastic Spanish zombie film [rec]. Quarantine 2 bares next to no resemblence to [rec] or its sequel, and almost none to Quarantine. The zombies are now more like sweaty plague victims than risen undead brain chompers (I guess to save on make-up fx). The action is painfully pedestrian and the plot is laughably bad for most the duration you're under the impression it was started by school hamsters. Started with an interesting setup not unlike a typical disaster movie, but rapidly spirals to pure crap. The actors seem ashamed at being involved in such a dire film yet for most part manage to do their jobs well. Really poor, I'd avoid it like the plague.

Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)

Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)
aka Resident Evil 4
Director: Paul W.S. Anderson
Writer: Paul W.S. Anderson
Cast: Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Wentworth Miller
While still out to destroy the evil Umbrella Corporation, Alice joins a group of survivors who want to relocate to the mysterious but supposedly unharmed safe haven known only as Arcadia.
IMDB Page
Good god watching this mess reminded me how long ago it feels since director/writer Paul W.S. Anderson blew us away with his exceptional sci-fi/horror gem Event Horizon. Not that I'm saying the new Resident Evil is any worse than the other sequels but it just feels more and more like a tired franchise now. The plot here is horrendous jumping from one place to another without much in the way of explanation, within the films 90 or so minutes we go from an underground facility in Tokyo, a disused military base in Canada, a US inner city high rise prison complex then ending up onboard an offshore medical experiment ship. Alice just seems to randomly show up, the only link between these places being the involvement of the Umbrella Corporation. I don't understand how they managed to succeeded so much with the anime that came out between this and Resident Evil 3: Extinction, that managed to develop its characters and sported a solid plot. Afterlife is just a mess of continuity, other than the prison segment it does away with the mutant zombies. This time Alice tries to stop Albert Wesker (clearly a fanboy of Mr Smith from the Matrix movies) to confuse matters even more he's now played by a different actor than he was in RE3. Also returning from RE3 is Claire Redfield now with memory loss, shes joined by a brother she doesn't even remember Chris Redfield. Even RE2's Jill Valentine turns up towards the end for nothing other than she's more than likely gonna be in the next installment.

What you can't fault the film for is its glossy action set pieces, Alice now as a neat clone device and no matter how many times we've seen it how can you not enjoy slow motion shotgun to head scenes. Typical of 3D features they throw in scenes to use the medium, here we get a pretty good Axeman segment that feels like a massive end of level video game boss. I really hope they manage to get their shit together for the next entry, but for that I think Anderson and his crew need to stop watching The Matrix and see the original Dawn of the Dead.

Hard Revenge, Milly: Bloody Battle (2009)

Hard Revenge, Milly: Bloody Battle (2009)

Cast: Miki Mizuno,Rei Fujita,Nao Nagasawa

Initially reluctant to become involved in any more bloodshed, Milly recognizes and identifies with Haru’s passion for vengeance and agrees to train her so she may exact her own revenge. But no sooner have they begun than they are accosted by a gang of Jack’s sycophants who want Milly dead once and for all. Led by a cyborg-armed psychopath named Ikki, they prove not only to be a match for Milly and Haru, they are also found to be in possession of a secret that could drive a deadly stake between the two women.
IMDB Page
Like for like sequel to the original Hard Revenge Milly, so much so the first film is almost shown in its entirety during the opening credits. Plot again is secondary to the films gory fight scenes this time Milly has to battle the family of the people she killed during the original. This time she's joined by another female Hasu who doesn't seem to know which side she should be fighting with or against. Milly still has her shotgun leg but now has metal fists and bullet nunchucks complete with laser sights, again recommended to fans of cheesy cinema & wild gore

Predators (2010)

Predators (2010)
Director: Nimród Antal
Writer: Alex Litvak, Michael Finch
Cast: Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Laurence Fishburne, Danny Trejo
A group of elite warriors are hunted by members of a merciless alien race known as Predators.
IMDB Page
Anyone like me who had expected this to do for Predator what Aliens did for the original Alien will be sadly let down, because what we get is a shameless Most Dangerous Game ripoff with Predators replacing the Count Zoroff role. 8 people are ripped from their lives and ported to a far away planet where they become the hunt for a group of Predators. For a film with so many good action moments they could of come up with a better plot. Also the characters are so one dimensional with next to no background what they did/was before falling out of the sky. You get a muscle bound Russian soldier, a yakuza/samurai type guy, African rebel soldier, a doctor (damn what is he gonna do heal people with twigs), a sexual deviant prisoner, a female army officer of some sort (she gives a brief comment on Arnie being only survivor cause he used mud to hide himself), Trejo seems to be just rehashing his Machete role for the few minutes hes onscreen then finally Brody as Royce the groups unofficial leader who Christ knows seems to be some brooding special ops soldier. Fishburne turns up halfway in as a scavenger who has managed to survive 8 maybe 10 seasons of these predator battles, he gives a little info on two types of Predator (big & smaller ones) that fight against each other almost as soon as he gets to say this he dies. Sure if your in the mood for a dumb action romp it'll be an adequate enough watch but I personally thought it was a total disaster. They successfully re-invented Batman & Startrek even the last Terminator was a step in the right direction after the piss poor 3rd sadly they've de-evolved the Predator franchise here, you get better plot and character development in video games than this.

30 Days of Night: Dark Days (2010)

30 Days of Night: Dark Days (2010)
Director: Ben Ketai
Writer: Steve Niles, Ben Templesmith, Ben Ketai
Cast: Kiele Sanchez,Diora Baird,Mia Kirshner
After surviving the incidents in Barrow, Alaska, Stella Olemaun relocates to Los Angeles, where she intentionally attracts the attention of the local vampire population in order to avenge the death of her husband Eben.
IMDB Page
Very poor straight to video sequel to 30 Days Of Night, the action as moved from the previous films chilly Alaskan small town to the seedier side of sunny LA. The plot follows Stella the lone survivor from the first movie (sadly most likely due to funds they've replaced Melissa George with Kiele Sanchez), shes now in LA doing lectures on her incident. She gets involved with a group of Vampire killers who are seeking to a kill an Elizabeth Bathory styled vamp leader called Lilith. About the only thing this sequel retains from the original is the way the vampires look (pale usually bald with all razor teeth). Don't get me wrong I wasn't expecting a massive budget for a STV movie, but at least they could of done a less muddled and quicker flowing paced plot than this trite. At least with the Lost Boys STV movies you got the cheesy fun of having the two Corey's frog brothers show up. other than the few brief moments it shows scenes from the original its all piss poor. Its got the most amateurish credits I think I've ever seen, imagine your Aunt and Uncle forced you to watch their camcorder holiday footage from their trip to LA. I've always enjoyed a good vampire yarn even if they suck theres usually blood and the odd naked vampire chick to look forward too, sadly here the blood looks like fruit juice plus zero bewb count with only 2 seconds of Lilith's ass on show even TV vampires give us more than this crap. I said "Pound for pound it’s the best vampire yarn since Near Dark" about the original, for Dark Days I'd say pound for pound go rent anything else and I pray they don't make any more.
