Headless Horseman (2007)

Headless Horseman (2007)
Director: Anthony C. Ferrante
Writer: Zachary Weintraub
The Headless Horseman rises every seven years to collect heads to keep a town alive and for him to be able to come back every seven years.
'An eye for an eye, an head for an head' Hack job attempt at mixing Legend Of Sleepy Hollow and 2000 Maniacs into one CGI loaded SciFi TV original movie. Film starts with a bit of back story on how the Headless Horseman (known as Headless in the film) loses his head. Then cuts to present day on Halloween, basically its the old pesky kids in a van go to a party plot, have van trouble while taking a short cut then stumble across Pa Rust and his helpful daughter Candy whom with the promise of helping to fix the van take the 7 dorky teens to a their local small town where everyone is 'one big family'. I won't give away more not for fear of giving spoilers but know anyone bothering to read will know this well worn formula so well. The acting isn't exactly bad just dull and the fx work is mostly typical sorry ass scifi channel CGI. I can't really say much in way of recommending this its painful to watch this trash best of times but I foolishly chose it as my 2007 Halloween night treat and boy was it a massive let down.'

Black Water (2007)

Black Water (2007)
Directors: David Nerlich, Andrew Traucki
Writers: David Nerlich, Andrew Traucki
Based on a true story about a man eating crocodile, Black Water is a thriller thats sounds a now familiar warning that Australia can be dangerous place for a holiday.
'Wonderful realistic crocodile film supposodly based on true events, the plots pretty much open water with a crocodile instead of sharks, but done with so much more tension and style. Based in the Mangrove Swamps of Northern Australia first time directors David Nerlich and Andrew Traucki have got to be commended for making what no other animal attack movie since jaws as managed to come close too. Cast of mostly TV actors do a sterling job also which is a nice change from the goofy characters you usually find in these kind of films. Its the second of supposedly three Croc movies to be released this year 1st being goofy but cheesly fun Primeval and the 3rd being the Wolf Creek directors Rogue, I very much doubt come year end Black Water won't be the one that triumphs over the others.'

Empty Rooms (2001)

Empty Rooms (2001)
Director: Toshiki Sato
Empty Room is a dark, highly erotic tale of a married couple whose relationship is slowly sliding into oblivion. Bored and sexually frustrated, the wife begins taking lovers while her unemployed husband spends his days wandering aimless around the city parks. Highly stylised and with a film noir feel, Empty Room is a fine example of how Japanese Pink cinema has developed into a unique genre all of its own.

Don't Be Scared (2006)

Don't Be Scared (2006)
Director: Master P
Writer: Master P
Hip-hop sensations Master P and Romeo star in this tale of urban horror. When a serial killer starts prowling a college campus for its next kill, chaos erupts as students realize they are the targets in a deadly game.
'Contender for not only the worst film of the year but of the millenium. Urban horror strikes more dread into horror fans hearts than seeing classics remade. Was that period in the 70's blaxsploitation was funky with the likes of Ganja & Hess/Blacula/Abby, but the current slurry of mostly black acted horror Holla/Dead Riot/Hood of the Living Dead and numerious Todd 'Watcha talkin bout Willis' Bridges acted ones have been pointless crapfests. So the fact Don't Be Scared is even worse is no small task. Its plot for what little there is revolves around a black guy who gets killed at a party, then being brought back alive to start on a killing spree. Everything about it blows poorly acted (musicians in movies suck, that goes more so when its rap/r'n'b stars) the pace is dire, the kills are lame I could go on more about its flaws but can't be bothered even die hard bad movie fans are gonna struggle with this.'

Blood Car (2007)
Director: Alex Orr
Writers: Hugh Braselton (story), Alex Orr
In the near future, gas prices are at an astronomical high. One man is determined to find an alternate fuel source. That alternate fuel source turns out to be blood...HUMAN BLOOD.
'The concept behind this is cool but done so poorly. The films pace as the feel that they picked up a camera filmed a bit then took a few weeks off then filmed some more, as none of it gels together. A few nice little gore FX scenes like the lawn mower style car engine don't help keep your attention for nearly long enough. Acting is sub troma level My Girls Anna Chlumsky must be starving or Blood Cars makers must have some dirt on her, because its beyond me why she's in such a lowgrade turkey. The musics mostly classical which I guess means free. All this though isn't as bad as the god awful use of cctv style cutbacks featuring two MIB like goons watching all the action, its very mst3k feeling only less funny. The only real selling point to b-movie fans is the sexual gags have plenty of boobs. Its no worse than the films troma have been pumping out for years but none of it adds up enough to make this worth your time.'

Gag (2006)
Director: Scott W. Mckinlay
Writer: Kirk Sever
Two professional thieves break into a house in search of a safe, only to discover a man beaten beyond recognition, tied down to torn mattress in a hidden room. They decide to help, only to become trapped by a serial killer whose torture methods will have them begging for death.
'Most likely aimed at Saw fans, if there's still any around that is after the god awful sequels. Opening credits roll over the now done to death format of a bound semi naked chick ready to be slaughtered, this time its in a room with loads of caged animals. She ends up being force fed a rat (viewers at this point most likely go urrgghhh and if they're old like me probably remember the series V). Cut to the movie itself which as two thieves who've chosen the wrong place to break into. When they stumbled into a room with a man gagged and tied to a bed, Leaving them with the question do you remove the gag to ask if its a kinky sex thing or leave him alone. here on in it all as shades of the Z/Gimp scene in Pulp Fiction with our two leads being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Its all done OK but never involving the viewer enough to make you care what the hell happens. Actings fine enough just very tv series feeling. As a few bloody bits and enough urrghh scenes to keep you awake and the odd sleazy moment like a scene two victims are forced to sleep with each other. Its key problem is there's no background to any of its characters and just not enough of a angle with its plot or variety in its settings or feel from one scene to the next for it to span its duration.'

'Another After Dark Horror Festival film. Dire dialogue aside the writers have tried to make an eco horror, when gas supplies dry up mankind fights to stay alive. For its clearly low budget it succeeds at making its locations look like barren wastelands. Its flaws are all the padded out talky breaks in the action, making the film seem clunky instead of flowing. That aside it’s nice for a low budget director to try and make something other than slasher, vampire or zombie films.'

Lake Dead (2007)
Director: George Bessudo

Cast: Cyrus Alexander, James C. Burns, Ryan Coughlin, Edwin Craig, Kelsey Crane
Beneath the calmest surface lies the deepest nightmare
'Another After Dark Horror Festival film, three sisters inherit a lakeside motel, from a grandfather they hadn’t been told about. They agree to travel down to see the place before deciding what to do. Due to boyfriend issues one agrees to travel alone and is killed before leaving her home. The other two along with boyfriends and a gang of friends rent an RV and decide to make a weekend of it. Only they’re set upon by the crazy locals. It delivers typical dumb shouty teens in peril acting. The gore is next to none existent and sadly when we do get some its CGI rendered blood. Horror fest is great at giving lower key movies a theatre audience, sadly with Lake Dead they wasted a slot as this deserved to stay in the STV market place. Not the worst horror film ever made but a damned unmemorable one.'

Stabbed in the Face (2004)
Director: Jason Bradford
Writer: Jared Scallions
Set in the mid 1980's, a group of young kids ventures off to a remote abandoned home for the Halloween adventure of their adolescent wet dreams. Unfortunately, a serial killer is on the loose, but what do horny young teens care for such trivialities? Only Terry, their demented leader and unsuspecting murderer of the group, notices bodies cropping up in places unrelated to the meticulous murders he himself has committed. Who will have the bigger body count, Terry or the mystery murderer? Will the group discover Terry's true psychopathic intents, or will the drugs, alcohol, and sex deaden their senses enough for Terry to deaden them?
'Clearly filmed on a micro low budget, and featuring none actors won't hopefully stop the cheese movie fans from hunting this down, its an aimable attempt and alot of fun. Plots typical horror trash fodder with teens taking a vacation, some babble about about a farmyard wife killing her cheating husband. For my tastes it was a little heavy on post punk/nu metal though the opening credits song was strong. Another flaw is some of the scenes are painfully dark, but on the whole has enough boobs, blood to keep you watching, also some fun dumb throwaway dialog like 'you put the dick in ridiculas'. One thing that impressed was the films attempt to pace itself proper something most lowgrade horror trash movies don't even try to do.'

Buried Alive (2007)

Terrifying horror film about a group of college students hunted by the evil spirit of a woman who was buried alive years ago in their secluded vacation house.
'From the director of Wishmaster and featuring Saw's Tobin 'Jigsaw' Bell comes yet another dumbed down American teen horror, plot is like a sub par Supernatural episode most likely an unfinished Scooby Doo 3 leftover. You've guessed it folks its another plot where kids go to some retreat and hear a spooky tale, then a 30 year old looking teen drags facts about some pesky demon/killer/ghost this time a witch from the internet. Its only redeeming point is the females are cute and lose their tops in a few scenes, the blood/gores next to none existent which is odd due to how many fx credits the director has to his name. Its by no means the worst of its type and glossy enough, just dull formula crap, doesn't seem like Kurtzman cares either as his next is a 28 Days Later sounding zombie film.'

Raiders of the Doomed Kingdom (1985)
Director: Sumat Saichur
Writer: Godfrey Ho
A group of Thai mercenaries set out to rescue a South-Vietnamese general and manage to kill off a lot of people and even land on an island of lepers!
'Highly entertaining war cheese from IFD films and penned by low grade legend Godfrey Ho. The film starts with a powerful montage of a Buddhist monk setting himself on fire, then napalm running naked kids, though once the IFD name flashes on screen, we know its all out cheese from here. After US troops pull out of Vietnam Cobra is made the leader of a small band of mercenaries . They are left to clean up any rogue communists and help free a captured general commander. Basically its a fun action romp for blokes, story's pretty light and involves a lot of running around jungles but thankfully we are never too far away from either violence or sex. Without sounding like I didn't enjoy it the film looks way bigger budget than its material really deserved it sports some huge action scenes and a cast of 1000s. American viewers maybe wise to give it a wide birth or at least be a little cautious as it paints the US in a pretty bad light, maybe one of the reasons it's not been given much of a chance in Western country's. You can't help but laugh though that they clearly use Asian actors for Americans by covering up their faces with either gas masks or sunglasses. That said I do remember more than a couple of American films that have portrayed Asians by painting a guy yellow and taping his eyes back. If your willing to overlook the political side of the film though, its a hugely entertaining movie that even gives John Woo a run for his money with how many blood squibs are used, think of it as the Apocalypse Now of cheeseball Indo/Thai action films.'

'Basically this is a throwback to the golden age of revenge films most notably Straw Dogs. Gillian Anderson smoulders as the cold city career girl whom takes a bit of rough Danny 'the geezer' Dyer to a English countryside party only for both of them to be attacked on their way back, this leaves both wanting revenge. The film never strays too far from familiar territory though for what it is, its done very well not even Dyer whom I usually can't stand is good in this. Also worth a mention is the wonderfuly sleazie Ralph 'Camberwell Carrot' Brown as one of the attackers. I'll give it a slightly higher than average rating would of got even more if Anderson had pulled the trigger. Well worth a casual nights viewing.'

'Truly disturbing feature from the team of Boyes/Mason whom with a reported budget of £500,000 and basically 3 core actors have managed to do what so many other multi million dollar horror movies fail to do, and that's deliver. It succeeds by working on a much more psychological level than its peers (films like Saw or Feed). Those films felt the need to explain their self whereas Broken just plays out the story in its grim almost unspoken brutal nature. It does have its flaws chiefly in how uneasy it makes you feel, its more a film you endure than enjoy and it forces you to ask yourself the the same question the abductor ask's and thats 'Will you go on?'. Not for everyone's tastes then, but if you can handle its nilistic approach one worth the view.

'Hehe finally a chance to see the film you've all heard about or maybe not as the case maybe. The films claim to fame is that it is the only movie made entirely in sign language for the hearing impaired (though there is voice-over dialogue for those not able to read sign language). This selling point is really odd none more so than when in places like the cafe bar when you see dozens signing at once or during a news room scene. Actors all have a very beatnik/hippy look so most likely it was made more as a social experiment than all out for exploitation reasons, and in fairness does specially with having no music and during scenes when there's no over spoken dialog make you wonder what being deaf is like. The film itself looks like they shot everything once like when one of the actors gets his coat caught in a car door. The plots just a ramble about Dracula whom when is onscreen which isnt much as a funny plastic nose though does have a somewhat hypnotic quality due to slowed down pace. Shame though after this film the trend for deafsploitation didn't continue as I'm sure Silentstein or WereMute would of been great as a triple feature.'

'Kicks in like a routine Japanese porno complete with pixeled out genitals then around the 40 min mark takes a real shift into extreme gore territory, and boy does it kick in as she chops a man in pieces. One of the most notable moments she masterbates with a choped off hand, a scene I'm sure would please fans of Jap AV legends like Daisuke Yamanouchi or Hisayasu Sato. By no means the best of the genre and due to its subject only recommended to fans of extreme cinema.Only gore hounds or fans of blured out sex scenes need apply'
